AMCA I -T.E.A.M
Co-operation
Sharon Kegeles, Professor at Barry
University, Leader of T.E.A.M.2003 and
AMCA International Advisor is currently in Bonaire with her group. They are
conducting a project titled “Leadership Training
for Adaptation of Coral Reef Scientific Data Collection Protocols for
Certified Disabled Divers.”
This is a unique project to train
leadership-level SCUBA divers to successfully manage and adapt to the needs
of individual disabled SCUBA divers during scientific data collection and
monitoring of coral reefs. This project is designed to offer effective
solutions to the dive leader as well as the certified disabled diver who is
interested in participating in a hands-on, field-based approach to marine
conservation regardless of personal physical abilities.
On each dive one person from the trained group will
simulate a disability and become a part of a working data collection team.
These exercises will raise awareness within the group of the capabilities of
divers with different abilities and enable them to successfully plan and
execute inclusive marine surveys for the future.
After the training phase has been
completed Sharon Kegeles and her group will undertake an underwater research
project as part of AMCA International’s ongoing work. This permitted
research involves surveying different sites within the Marine Park.
The Park will be presented with a copy of the final
report when completed.
Whilst in Bonaire Sharon Kegeles
will give an informal presentation on AMCAI’s work at the Habitat property
to any interested divers upon request.
We would like to thank His
Excellency the Lieutenant General for his kind permission to undertake this
work.
