The Initiative

Goals

bulletTo establish a core of instructors who can train physically challenged persons.
bulletTo establish a core of physically challenged divers interested in participating in Marine Conservation and who are trained as divers.
bulletTo set up dive survey to identify and record indicator species specific to the marine environment in identified location.
bulletTo adapt and implement 3 marine protocols to make them accessible to all regardless of physical ability.
bulletTo set up baseline surveys to record indicator species.
bulletTo initiate monitoring of the marine environment.
bulletTo install web cams to assist in monitoring and encouraging ecotourism through Internet connection (If appropriate)
bulletTo initiate national and international volunteer programmes.
bulletTo initiate marine conservation/awareness education for younger children.
bulletTo achieve benefits for private, public, education, NGO’s and working partners.
bulletTo design/implement 2 Courses in Marine education for all.
bulletTo make the physically challenged employable within the field of Marine Conservation within parent country and internationally.
bulletTo add to authoritative manuals.
bulletTo make the project sustainable beyond 5 years.

Targets

bulletEducational awareness of indicator species such as seahorses.
bulletEducational awareness of corals or prominent habitat.
bulletEducational awareness of physically challenged community.
bulletQuantitative evaluation of baseline surveys.
bulletQuantitative evaluation of new adapted protocols in comparisons with original protocol.
bulletQuantitative evaluation of monitoring to give an overall view of the health of the marine environment.
bulletRaise awareness of ecotourism in specific country.
bulletIntroduce/produce 2 courses aimed at university students on the subject of integration of physically challenged into Marine Conservation.
bulletProduce 2 manuals on “Integration of physically challenged onto Marine Conservation” and  “Marine Conservation in specific country”.
bulletAssist Private companies in raising their environmental and social awareness profile.

Objectives

bulletThe purpose of this initiative/project is to have encouraged all to be involved in the marine environment. Through this initiative’s/project’s methods and expertise we shall have enabled those that are physically challenged to fully participate in marine conservation.
bulletTo adapt/implement adapted international protocols. These adapted protocols will take into consideration the physical constraints of some divers while maintaining scientific soundness of the procedure.
bulletTo survey the coastline/marine environment to record the presence of indicator species using protocols. The resulting data show be made available to:

1)      Private and public sponsors and working partners.

2)      International interested parties. 

bulletTo encourage ecologists and promote environmental education development through the above 3 points.

Activities

The activities of this initiative/project will be based on the original initiative carried out in Jordan. These activities will be tailored to the individual circumstances of the country and individuals applying the project/initiative.
